Rafferty: We'll Stay Positive

Defender not getting too down after loss at Cheltenham

6 January 2024

Joe Rafferty does not believe that Pompey need to push the panic button after defeat at Cheltenham.

Two bits of sloppy play were capitalised on by Liam Sercombe to secure a 2-1 victory for the struggling hosts.

That came just moments after Tom Bradbury’s own-goal had given the League One table toppers a deserved lead.

Rafferty admits the result is a blow, but knows that the Blues are still in a healthy position as they look to secure promotion.

The defender said: “If we want to achieve something then we need to take three points from games like this, so we’re all disappointed.

“Now it’s about picking ourselves up and being ready for the next one because we have to be more ruthless in both boxes.

"There’s plenty of the season left and we’re still in a good position, so there’s no point being negative."

“We could have been two or three goals up in the first half and then we gave away two goals that were a bit soft.

“I don’t really know what to say about the refereeing decisions because they didn’t make sense to me.

“But you can’t blame the officials for losing games because it’s up to us to put it to bed and not focus on what they’re doing.

“We haven’t played badly – we looked really good in parts – and yet we’ve come away with nothing, which makes it even more frustrating.

“It’s a sticky patch for us – we know that. But there’s plenty of the season left and we’re still in a good position, so there’s no point being negative.

“We’ll just have to stay positive and give it all that we’ve got when we’re back at Fratton Park next week.”
