Pompey Mourn Dave Dodson

Former Blues winger passes away

6 June 2024

Pompey are mourning the death of Dave Dodson, who has passed away at the age of 84.

The outside-left – who represented England at youth level – was a youngster at Arsenal and featured for Swansea before moving to Fratton Park for a fee of £4,000 in December 1961.

He arrived the day before Tony Barton signed from Nottingham Forest and the two wingers soon became firm friends.

They both made their debuts in a 2-2 draw with Swindon – and Dodson found the target with a fine header.

He netted 10 times in total that season, helping the Blues to secure promotion by claiming the Division Three title.

‘Dynamite Dave’ quickly adjusted to life at a higher level, scoring a hat-trick against Walsall on the opening day of the 1962/63 campaign.

However, serious knee injuries saw him miss the second half of the season and the entirety of the next one.

He eventually made the switch to Aldershot in 1964, joining up with fellow former Pompey players Tony Priscott and Phil Gunter.

Dodson made a total of 62 appearances during his three years with the Blues and scored 21 goals.

The thoughts of everyone at Portsmouth Football Club are with Dave’s family and friends at this sad time.
