Pompey Academy suffered their first Merit League defeat of the season after being convincingly beaten by Swindon.

Joel McGregor netted a hat-trick as the Robins secured a 6-1 victory at Copnor Road, with Jo Owiti bagging a brace and Miles Obodo also on target.

The only positive moment for the Blues came when Tayo Singerr converted a cross from fellow substitute Maxwell Hurst.

Lead professional development phase coach Sam Hudson said: “We weren’t too bad in the first half, but went in one goal down after they got straight through the middle of us.

“There had been a few chances created, even though we weren’t great, and there were some set-piece moments.

“We looked a decent threat once we got our build-up play right, particularly switching from right to left.

“There were a couple of changes because we needed to manage minutes with guys coming back from injuries.

“It was more of the same straight after the restart and then for the last half-an-hour, it was just poor in every sense.

"It looked more like a bunch of individuals rather than a collective and there were no real positives for us to take."

“We gave the ball away too easily, the first touch wasn’t great and they were giving team-mates problems instead of passes.

“Even things like duelling, tracking runners and getting tight was a real issue, which just isn’t like us at all.

“I think it was the first time that no player ran more than 10k, while normally we’re a side that press and get after our opponents.

“It looked more like a bunch of individuals rather than a collective and there were no real positives for us to take.

“We were 4-0 down and then Max crossed for Tayo to finish. We’d worked on exploiting the space and getting early crossing in, so that was pleasing.

“But Swindon soon made it 6-1 and the game was summed up by their right-back scoring a hat-trick. We just weren’t doing our jobs properly.

“After talking about how well we reacted at Stevenage last week, it was just a really disappointing day.

“We didn’t do ourselves justice and got exactly what we deserved out of the game. There are a lot of matches coming up in April and we’ll have to be a lot better.”
