Mousinho: Nothing Wrong With Getting Excited

Boss discusses promotion hopes and Peterborough test

15 March 2024

With Pompey sitting top of the table and just eight games left to play, there is naturally plenty of excitement around Fratton Park.

And John Mousinho does not want to dampen anyone’s enthusiasm for the final six weeks of the season.

He wants the prospect of winning promotion to the Championship to drive his players on to get over the line.

A trip to fellow hopefuls Peterborough is next on the list and Mousinho is looking forward to another competitive contest.

The Blues boss said: “We can’t get carried away with everything that’s happening, but I don’t think I need to keep the players grounded.

“Sometimes it’s healthy to get caught up in the excitement of what can be achieved and it can help to inspire.

“The end goal is now in sight and I think that can be a motivating factor to get the lads at the top of their game.

“That then radiates into the stadium and to the fans, so there’s no point hiding away from the position we’ve put ourselves in.

“Now we just need to make sure that we step on for these final eight games and try to achieve something.

“I think that Peterborough are a fantastic side. I went to watch them last week and they blew Northampton away.

“They’ve got some really talented. young players and are very well coached, so I think it should be a good game of football.

“A lot has been made about their pitch, but it doesn’t seem to be hindering the way they want to play football.

“There’s no worries there from us and it’s something we’ll have to deal with, as we have done in the past at other grounds.”

Jack Sparkes and Callum Lang missed the midweek win over Burton after both hurting their ankles at Blackpool a few days earlier.

Mousinho said: “We think that Jack will be available for the game – with the nature of his injury, it wasn’t worth risking on Tuesday.

“We’re probably a bit less hopeful on Callum, but we’ll see how it settles down and then make a decision from there.”
