Mousinho: The Magic Number

Boss not setting targets ahead of Blackpool test

8 March 2024

With games starting to run out, fans are busy working out every single possible permutation for the end of the season.

John Mousinho’s men currently enjoy a six-point advantage at the League One summit and have just 10 matches left to play.

Next up is a visit to a Blackpool side who have inflicted one of Pompey’s two defeats on home soil so far this term.

But Mousinho is refusing to set any targets in terms of how many points will be needed to seal promotion.

The Blues boss said: “The number is still dependent on what other teams do, so it’s too difficult to know what it will take.

“We saw last season that a side finished third with 96 points and very nearly didn’t make the play-off final.

“So we have to make sure we focus on ourselves – I’m not just saying that, we think it’s must better to affect what we can control.

“Naturally, people start talking about promotion when you get to this stage of the season and it feels a bit more palpable.

“We can use that to our advantage as we look to keep going and try to continue grinding out the positivity.

“It’s a tough run-in, but I think it would be whoever we faced and the state of the league is that you get sides up and down the table picking up good results.

“There are very few teams at the moment with nothing to play for and we relish the challenge that lies ahead.

“Blackpool deserved to beat us earlier in the season and have a huge amount of talent in their squad, with a manager who know what he’s doing at this level.

“They also have an excellent home record, so we’ll have to be properly at it to get something from the game.”

Zak Swanson could make a first appearance for almost three months after recovering from a groin problem.

Mousinho said: “He’s returned to full training this week, which has been a real positive and we’ll see how he settles down before making a decision for Saturday.”
