Mousinho: We Should Have Put The Game To Bed

Boss reflects on win over Burton

12 March 2024

It was as dominant a display as you could hope to see for much of the evening at Fratton Park.

So John Mousinho was left slightly frustrated that Pompey had to survive a nervy conclusion to their League One contest with Burton.

Kusini Yengi opened the scoring with a cool dinked penalty just before the break and added another goal in the second half.

But the hosts could not finish their opponents off and the Brewers replied through John Brayford late on.

A 2-1 victory was ultimately secured for the table-toppers, though, and Mousinho felt there were plenty of positives

The Blues boss said: “I’m delighted with the result and, for about 75 minutes, the performance as well.

“It’s not how I used to take penalties, but as long as the ball goes in the back of the net then that’s all that matters.

“We deserved the lead at the break because we’d missed an open goal and had some other really good chances.

“There was a solid shout for an earlier penalty for a foul on Abu as well, but it was all about making sure we kept building in the second half.

"There were just some errors of judgment late on and I was scratching my head at how close the game was at the end."

“I was pleased with how we got the ball to the numbers 10s – Christian did everything but get a goal, while Myles was effective when he got into the right positions.

“Things got slightly easy for us at 2-0 up and we perhaps took our foot off the gas against a decent side that are a threat from set-pieces.

“You always leave yourself open if you don’t put the game to bed and we should have done that with a third and fourth goal.

“It just made for a bit of a tense finish, but that shouldn’t take away from the display as a whole because we looked really good before conceding.

“There were just some errors of judgment late on and I was scratching my head at how close the game was at the end.”

Jack Sparkes and Callum Lang were missing from the side after being forced off with ankle injuries at Blackpool on Saturday.

Mousinho said: “We were close with Jack, but he’d had stitches and there was the potential of opening them up in a physical game.

“It wasn’t really the right one for him and we want guys coming into these matches at 100 per cent, so we decided not to play him.

“Callum was always going to be doubtful for this one, but hopefully they’ll both be okay for the weekend.”
