Saydee Off The Mark

Forward delighted with first league goal for Pompey

2 March 2024

Christian Saydee had been waiting patiently to break his League One goalscoring duck for Pompey.

But coming off the bench to net the winning goal against Oxford at the Fratton End was some way to get off the mark.

He collected Marlon Pack’s pass and rode Ciaron Brown’s challenge before calmly slotting the ball into the net.

It secured a 2-1 victory for the promotion-chasing Blues and Saydee was delighted to make such a big impact.

The forward said: “I’m very happy and have waited a long time for that. It felt really good and I’m buzzing.

“Skip wrapped it in and I came out on top in a 50/50 – as soon I was one-on-one with the keeper, I just thought I had to hit the back of the net.

“I don’t think I was ever nervous and was just concentrating on making a good connection and hitting the target.

“I’ve finally got one and I can go home to my parents and we can talk all about it, so I’m happy for that.”

Saydee was able to soak up the Fratton End’s acclaim when he was pushed towards the supporters by Colby Bishop after the final whistle.

He said: “I knew that was coming and was waiting for him to come over to me, but it did feel really good.

“I was looking at the clock towards the end and could hear nothing but the fans. It’s great to have them with us all the time.”
