Whyte Buzzing At Posh Win

Winger provided crucial assist for Pompey

16 March 2024

Much has been made of the depth of Pompey’s squad this season as they chase promotion to the Championship.

And a prime example of that came at Peterborough, where two substitutes combined to secure all three points.

It was Gavin Whyte who got the assist, providing the pass for Kusini Yengi to slot home the only goal of a breathless contest.

And the winger felt that the Blues deserved to secure all three points because of a fine team performance.

Whyte said: “It’s a great win because we knew it was going to be a tough game against one of the better sides in the league.

“The boys dug in deep, worked hard and were rewarded for all of that. I’m absolutely buzzing after that.

“The manager told me to be positive, affect the game and get into pockets – I think that’s exactly what I did.

“Kas is good at stretching the game and gives us something different. He was excellent and I thought all the boys were superb.

“I saw him free and in some space. I knew that if I switched it and he’s one-on-one, then that’s what he’s good at.

“It was a great goal and we see what good feet he has in training every day. I think there were too many step-overs, but the fans enjoyed it!”

Whyte has not featured on too many occasions for Pompey since the turn of the year, so was pleased to make a positive impact.

He said: “It feels really good because it’s been well documented that I’ve had a tough season and I just want to help the boys.

“It’s just been a bit stop-start for me and things haven’t always gone as I’ve wanted, but I’ve tried to dig in deep.

“I’ve just tried to be positive because it’s tough when you’re not involved and I don’t think people always realise that.

“My family are back home and I’ve perhaps found it a bit tough not seeing the kids, but as footballers you have to make sacrifices.

“I think I’m going to go back and see them for a few days with the international break and there’s a chance to recharge.”
