Yengi: Panenka Was Planned

Striker bagged brace in win over Burton

12 March 2024

There were a couple of moments in the first half at Fratton Park that Kusini Yengi will not forget in a hurry.

The first, however, he would definitely like to, with the striker missing a gaping goal from just a few yards out.

He had a chance to redeem himself just before the break, winning a penalty and then converting it with a cheeky Panenka.

Yengi later doubled Pompey’s lead against Burton, although with John Brayford reducing the visitors’ deficit, it could have been a more comfortable evening.

The Australia international said: “It’s a good win and we had to dig deep in the end because we’d got ourselves in a sticky situation.

“We probably should have scored more goals to really put the game to bed, but it’s three points and so I’m happy.

"I’ve taken some penalties already this season and the keepers do their homework, so I’m thinking about that as well."

“I’m happy to score two, although I always want more – I missed an open net, so it could have been a hat-trick.

“I saw the ball a little bit late and just didn’t have my feet right. I quickly stuck a toe at it and ended up missing.

“I’d already made a decision coming into the game that I was going to take a penalty the way I did. I always stick with the process.

“I’ve taken some penalties already this season and the keepers do their homework, so I’m thinking about that as well.

“We got the second, but we dominated the game and should have put the ball in the net a few more times.

“The fans were awesome and really got behind us. When things aren’t quite going right, they push us on to get the momentum back.”
