Yengi’s Adrenaline Rush

Striker reflects on match-winning moment at Peterborough

16 March 2024

Kusini Yengi had to settle for a place on the bench at Peterborough, despite his midweek Fratton heroics.

But the striker was soon given an opportunity to prove his worth again after Christian Saydee limped off with a hamstring injury.

He was picked out by Gavin Whyte in the second half to slot home the goal that secured three valuable points in the race for promotion.

And Yengi revelled in the chance to celebrate his impact with the rest of the team – plus more than 4,000 travelling Blues fans.

He said: “I had to control the ball, look at the defender and where the space is, then make a decision on what I’m going to do, execute and shoot.

“It was an amazing rush of adrenaline, with my team-mates leaping on my back and all the fans jumping around. I loved it.

“I want to start every game, but the gaffer chose to put me on the bench and I’m part of a team, so I wait for my opportunity.

“When called upon, I was ready to come on and help us win. That’s important and there are a number of players looking to contribute. You have to play your role.

“I love those scenes at the end of the game and they’re becoming regular. There was relief because we had to hold out at the end and everyone was exhausted.

“It shows massive resilience, togetherness in the squad and heart because we’ve had a few setbacks, but those came in played their role.

“I was scrolling on Twitter and saw some pictures of the people travelling up. It was awesome and we really feel the support of the fans.

“We’re happy with the three points and the performance – and looking forward to maybe a few days off to relax and reset.”

Yengi will now jet off to Australia to join up with the Socceroos squad for a couple of World Cup qualifiers against Lebanon.

He said: “It’s a great honour and a responsibility when you get called up to play for your national team.

“I’ve been lucky enough to have a few appearances now and am looking to build on those and score some goals to help us qualify for the World Cup.”
