Johnson signed for Pompey from Accrington Stanley ahead of the 2020/21 season on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year.
The defender spent his youth career at Middlesbrough – competing in the 2015/16 UEFA Youth League – before being introduced to the senior squad by manager Garry Monk.
Despite not making a first team appearance for the Boro, Johnson played in three EFL Trophy games during the 2016/17 season.
The following campaign, he was sent on loan to Accrington Stanley and – following several impressive performances – was snapped up permanently by the Lancashire side in January 2018.
Stanley went on to earn promotion as League Two champions, with Johnson contributing 35 appearances and contributing one goal to help his side to the title.
He made the step-up to the third tier with Accrington and made 83 appearances over the next two seasons as an ever-present in John Coleman’s side.
Despite being versatile enough to play across the back four or in central midfield, Johnson has operated as a right-back for Kenny Jackett’s side since his arrival.
