Johnson signed for Pompey from Accrington ahead of the 2020/21 season on a two-year deal, with the option of a further year.

The right-back spent his youth career at Middlesbrough – competing in the 2015/16 UEFA Youth League – before being introduced to the senior squad by manager Garry Monk.

Despite not making a senior appearance for Boro, he featured in three EFL Trophy games during the 2016/17 season.

Johnson was sent on loan to Accrington and – following several impressive performances – was snapped up permanently by the Lancashire outfit in January 2018.

Stanley went on to earn promotion as League Two champions, with Johnson making 35 appearances and contributing one goal to help his team to the title.

He quickly adapted to life at a higher level and played 83 times over the next two seasons as an ever-present in John Coleman’s side.

Johnson was a regular under previous Blues boss Kenny Jackett, but was sent on loan to Fleetwood in August 2021.
