David Wheeler

Date of birth

Signed on loan from QPR, Wheeler arrives at Fratton Park on a deal until the end of the season.

Penned a deal with non-league Lewes in 2008 following his release from Brighton and Hove Albion’s academy, before a move to Staines Town in 2011.

Attracted the attention of league clubs during an impressive two-year spell with the Swans, in which he twice won the ‘Player of the Season’ and ‘Players’ Player of the Season’ awards.

And it was Exeter City who won his signature in 2013, as Wheeler went on to make 171 appearances for the Grecians, netting 39 times.

Primarily employed on the right wing by then-manager Paul Tisdale, Wheeler also featured as a wing-back and up front during a three-year spell at St James Park.

Year-on-year development culminated in an outstanding campaign in 2016/17, as he netted 21 times in 42 Sky Bet League Two appearances, and he was duly named ‘Fans’ Player of the Season’, as well as scooping the club’s ‘Golden Boot’ award.

Exeter reached fifth place in the league that campaign, cementing a play-off berth, with Wheeler scoring in his side’s semi-final first leg with Carlisle.

And he also netted a fine equaliser in the final against Blackpool at Wembley, although it was in vain as the Seasiders ran out 2-1 winners on the day, ensuring promotion to League One.

Off the back of an outstanding season, Championship QPR made a permanent move for him on deadline day in the summer of 2017, as he went on to make nine appearances in 2017/18, scoring once.

His only goal for the Hoops so far came against Middlesbrough in September 2017.

Skilful and good in the air, Wheeler is also a Sports Science graduate from Brunel University, study he undertook whilst playing for Staines.
