Mousinho: An Occasion To Savour

Boss says Pompey can enjoy Wigan contest

19 April 2024

The magnitude of the achievement has yet to fully sink in for John Mousinho.

In his first full season as a head coach, he has guided Pompey to the League One title with two games to spare.

It should ensure a carnival atmosphere for the final couple of fixtures – against Wigan at Fratton Park on Saturday followed by a trip to play-off chasing Lincoln the following weekend.

And Mousinho is looking forward to the opportunity to return to the scene of Tuesday night’s celebrations.

The Blues boss said: “There’s the odd occasion when it sinks in and you get flashes of emotions after receiving messages on your phone.

“I spoke to Michael and Eric on the night, but it’s going to take me a while to get back to everyone else because so many people have reached out.

“I think it’s brilliant to get everything wrapped up with two games to go and it means we enjoy the final few days of the season.

"To end up with all three and become champions is unbelievable – you couldn’t really script the way it happened."

“It will be great to savour everything at Fratton Park on Saturday – I’m not sure it can get any better than that.

“The focus was on getting promoted and we’ve managed to do that. Towards the end of the Barnsley game, it was about securing that point.

“But to end up with all three and become champions is unbelievable – you couldn’t really script the way it happened. It was one of those nights when everything happened perfectly.”

Mousinho believes that the target of being the first Pompey side to reach a century of points can motivate his side against the Latics.

He said: “We were back in on Friday to focus on Wigan and to make sure that we pay the proper respect to this game.

“There’s not much riding on the outcome for either side, although we’d obviously like to win it and be in with a chance of finishing on 100 points.

“Wigan have secured safety in what’s been a difficult season for them and hopefully both teams can enjoy a nice day.

“We’ve got a lot of players to select from. I don’t think Zak Swanson’s injury is too severe. It’s just that ongoing groin problem he’s had that we want to get to the bottom of.”
