Mousinho's Pride At Title Triumph

Boss reflects on victory over Barnsley

16 April 2024

In his first full season as a head coach, John Mousinho has led Pompey to the League One title.

They got the job done with a dramatic – if at times unconvincing – 3-2 victory over Barnsley at a jubilant Fratton Park.

The hosts twice fought from behind, with Kusini Yengi and Colby Bishop grabbing equalisers before Conor Shaughnessy nodded a late winner.

It means that Pompey are heading to the Championship as champions and an emotional Mousinho is proud of their achievement.

The Blues boss said: “It hasn’t quite sunk in yet! That will happen once everything finally starts to settle down.

“There was a lot of frustration until whatever time it was that we got the equaliser, but who cares?! It doesn’t matter.

“We were so poor, but we found a way to win somehow and that sums up these boys. They got the job done.

“Even when we were 2-1 down, to get the crowd going and have the momentum behind us makes me so proud.

"It’s a remarkable effort and a serious achievement to be crowned champions ahead of some of the other sides in this division."

“Those final few minutes were absolutely incredible and like nothing that I’ve ever experienced before.

“It’s a remarkable effort and a serious achievement to be crowned champions ahead of some of the other sides in this division.

“This was obviously the goal at some point, but I never could have imagined it would happen this quickly and with two games to go.

“I’m genuinely so pleased for everyone at the football club because they’ve gone through so much in the past.

“I know how difficult it was to have been on the brink of liquidation and to come back from that. It’s great to be a part of that and a special privilege.”

Mousinho and his players will take the headlines, but Pompey’s boss was keen for the praise to be spread around.

He said: “It’s a bit of a cliché, but you can’t achieve anything on your own. It goes right to the very top with the owners and to everyone in all departments at the club.

“I think probably 95 per cent of the people who work for Pompey are fans and there are people in tears. It’s amazing.”
