Morrell’s World Cup Pride

Midfielder heading off to Qatar with Wales

10 November 2022

Joe Morrell has become the first Pompey player to be picked for a World Cup squad in 12 years.

And the midfielder is honoured to be representing Wales, who have qualified for the finals for just the second time.

He will head out to the unique winter tournament in Qatar following Saturday’s League One contest at Morecambe.

Rob Page’s side will have to navigate a group containing England, USA and Iran, but Morrell is confident they can progress.

He said: “It’s obviously exciting and I’m very proud – it’s something I’ve put a lot of hard work into over the years.

“Growing up playing for Wales, it was something that was never considered realistic and the country haven’t been there for a long time.

“So hopefully this can provide some inspiration for future generations to see that it’s possible for Wales to be at a World Cup.

“I’m sure it will be a great occasion because it’s the biggest sporting event in the world and it’s amazing to play a part in that.

“My family, girlfriend and mates are all going out there and are excited. It’s been more stressful for them than me in terms of sorting everything.

“We’re not naïve and have a switched on squad who are happy to raise awareness of the issues that Qatar have had, but of course we’re also going out there to do our job.

“We’ve got a tough group and the pressure won’t be on us, but we want to make a mark like we’ve done at the Euros. There’s no reason why we can’t achieve anything we set our minds to.”

Morrell admits that the lure of the World Cup has been impossible to ignore, but is hoping to leave the Blues on a high.

He said: “It’s difficult – perhaps more than I thought – and I have struggled with it over the past few months, along with the injuries and illness.

“But I think Pompey fans will see a better Joe Morrell after the World Cup because it has been at the back of my mind.

“We know it will be tough at Morecambe – we found that last season – and they’re strong at home, so we’ll have to be at our best.

“The intention is to come away with all three points, though, and then hopefully be off to Qatar afterwards.”
