Boss discusses meeting the chairman and Oxford test

25 October 2022

Danny Cowley is looking forward to meeting Pompey’s chairman for the first time in person this week.

Michael Eisner will be heading over from America to take in the next two games against Oxford and Shrewsbury.

His last visit came just before the Covid pandemic, although fellow directors Eric Eisner and Andy Redman made the trip across the Atlantic earlier this year.

Despite the long distance between them, however, Cowley has chatted with the former Disney CEO on numerous occasions.

The Blues boss said: “We speak on a regular basis – pretty much weekly – via Zoom and the family have been nothing but supportive since the first day we arrived at the club.

“It will be good to meet them in person for the first time, although we did of course see Eric and Andy when they came over earlier in the year.

“Michael coming over with his family is absolutely brilliant and hopefully we can give them two games to remember.

“We’re appreciative of the opportunity he’s given us and we’ve always had clarity about what the project is.

“He’s given us the confidence to take a long-term perspective and our ambitions are to build the foundations that can create sustained success. We’re making progress with that.”

Oxford are currently sitting 19th in the League One table, but Cowley believes they belong much higher up the standings.

He said: “They’ve got a really good team and had some injury problems at the start of the season, which probably disrupted them.

“Most of the key players are now back and they were at full tilt when I watched them win at Exeter recently.

“They played with a real rhythm and control, dominating the ball and carrying threat on the transition.

“I would anticipate that they’ll move up through the league very quickly and it’s not a game we’re taking lightly.

“We’ll need to perform at our best if we want to get a positive result, but we’re under the lights at Fratton and there’s no better place to be.”

Cowley took a depleted squad to Forest Green at the weekend, but hopes to have some players back soon.

He said: “We had some challenges ahead of Saturday, with four midfielders missing, but I thought the boys did remarkably well.

“Joe Rafferty has trained again with the group and so has Tom Lowery, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed.”
